Global ETF inflows surged to $900 billion in the first half of 2025, marking a 25% year-over-year increase, according to State Street's midyear review. Active strategies led the charge with $267 billion in inflows—a 73% jump—now representing 39% of U.S. ETF demand.

"ETFs have evolved from passive index trackers to vehicles for any investment approach," said Frank Koudelka, State Street's global head of ETF solutions. Active products command higher fees than passive funds but undercut traditional mutual funds, offering strategies from stock-picking to volatility control.

While passive investing maintains momentum, the accelerating adoption of active ETFs reflects growing sophistication among investors. The sector's trajectory could steepen further if U.S. regulators approve share-class ETFs, unlocking new structural flexibility.
